Squadbook

Questions, answered

Setup, linking, what gets tracked, and what to do when something does not show up. Commands are typed in Discord, in a channel Squadbook can see. Each game Squadbook follows on its own has a page too: Tabletop Simulator, League of Legends, and WARDOGS. Movie nights have a page of their own as well.

Getting started

How do I set it up in my server?
  1. Add Squadbook from the home page.
  2. Run /setup. It asks for an organizer role, a channel, and a default game. You can skip any of them.

That is the whole server setup. After that, turn on the parts your group wants. Each one is separate, and you can use one or all of them:

Does everyone need to do something, or just one person?

One person sets up the server. Everyone else only links the accounts they want tracked: Steam, a Riot ID, or nothing at all. Friends who never link anything can still be added to a game by name as guests.

What does it cost?

Logging, stats, leaderboards, achievements, and every link on this page are free. Premium is $3.99 a month per server and adds unlimited history, leaderboard images, and CSV export. Subscribe from the Squadbook store page in Discord or with /premium status in your server, and cancel in Discord any time.

How can we help Squadbook?

Vote for it on top.gg. Votes are how other friend groups find Squadbook, and it takes ten seconds, once every 12 hours. /vote has the link, tells you when you can vote again, and shows who in your server votes most this month. Vote once in a year and your Wrapped card carries the Squadbook supporter badge.

Steam

How do I link Steam?
  1. In Steam, open your profile, right-click the page, and choose Copy Page URL.
  2. In Discord, run /steam link and paste that link into the profile box.
  3. Open Steam and accept the friend invite from Squadbook Companion. If you were already friends with it, there is nothing to accept.

An organizer also picks where session cards post, once per server, with /config steam.

Why does a Steam account need to be my friend?

The friendship is your on and off switch. Squadbook only follows members who linked Steam in Discord and have Squadbook Companion on their friends list, so nobody is tracked by accident, and removing it stops tracking at once. It reads the status line under your name, the same text your friends list shows, and nothing more. It has no access to your account, your inventory, or your chats.

How does profit and loss tracking work?

Some games put a running figure in the friends list, for example a loss of $13,905. While you play, Squadbook follows that line within seconds and updates a live card in Discord. The game sets the figure back to zero when a new match starts, so Squadbook banks what each match came to and your session result is all of them added up. Then the live card is replaced by the result, with today's total and the last seven days.

/steam pnl shows your daily totals per game, your best and worst sitting, and what you are up or down right now. Add user: to look at a friend.

Right now the only Steam game Squadbook follows is WARDOGS. Any other game you play is left alone: no session is recorded and no card posts.

Will Squadbook Companion ever message me or send a trade?

No. It never sends messages, links, or trade offers, and it only sends a friend invite to someone who just ran /steam link. If an account with that name messages you or offers a trade, it is an impostor. Block it and report it to Steam.

How do I stop it?

Remove Squadbook Companion from your Steam friends list. Tracking stops at once, with nothing else to do. /steam unlink also removes the link on the Discord side. Sessions already recorded stay in your history unless a server organizer erases the server's data.

My library came back empty when I linked.

The "games everyone owns" feature reads your public library. In Steam, open Edit Profile, then Privacy Settings, and set Game details to Public. Then run /steam sync. Session tracking does not need this, because it goes through the friendship.

League of Legends

How do I link my Riot ID?
  1. Run /link riot.
  2. Type your Riot ID with the tag, like Name#1234, and pick your region.

Games you play after linking log themselves a minute or two after they end. Nothing from before you linked is pulled in.

My ARAM Mayhem games do not show up.

Riot keeps some modes, ARAM Mayhem among them, out of its public API, so no bot can see them there. The Squadbook Companion app for Windows reads finished games from your own League client and sends them in, every mode included. Run /link app in Discord for the token it asks for.

My friend does not want to install anything. Do they still get stats?

Yes. If they ran /link riot and played in the same game as someone who has the app, their row is filled in from that person's report.

How are grades worked out?

Each player is ranked against the whole lobby on damage, kill participation, KDA, and the better of healing or damage taken, so tanks and healers are judged on their job. Dealing far more than an equal share of your team's damage counts on its own, so a carry in a lost game still grades well. The blend becomes a grade from S+ to D. Grades only appear when at least four players' numbers are known.

Riot's own end-of-game grade is different: it compares you with everyone who plays that champion and ignores the result. Riot does not publish it, but the companion app can read it from your own client as the end-of-game screen shows it, and the card then shows both, for example B ยท Riot S. It only ever works for the person running the app.

Tabletop games and Tabletop Simulator

How do I log a game by hand?
  1. Run /game start. It asks who is playing, prefilled from your voice channel.
  2. A card appears in the channel. Everything after that is buttons on the card: eliminate a player, change life, pass the turn, end the game.
  3. When the game ends, the result, the story of the game, and any achievements post on their own.

With no game named it starts Commander. Add game: to pick any of the 74 others built in, from Catan to Rocket League, or make your own with /game template create. For a game that is already over, /game quick logs it in one line.

Do I need Tabletop Simulator?

No. The card in Discord works for any table, including a real one. Tabletop Simulator only removes the button pressing: the table object fills in the players, life, knockouts, and turns for you.

How do I connect my Tabletop Simulator table?
  1. In Discord, in the channel where games should post, run /link tts and copy the token.
  2. Subscribe to Squadbook Table on the Steam Workshop.
  3. In Tabletop Simulator, with your table loaded, open Games, then Workshop, click the three dots on Squadbook Table, and load it into your table. Right-click the object and choose Save Object, and from then on it is under Objects, Saved Objects.
  4. Paste the token into the text box on the object and click away. It is saved on the object.
  5. Once everyone is seated with decks out, press Send to Squadbook.

Turn on Turns in Tabletop Simulator and every turn is timed as well.

What does the table object read?

Seated players and their seat colors, commanders, life trackers, knockouts, and turn changes. During the game it also reads the board: the names of face-up cards on each battlefield, whose deck each came from, what is attached to what, and hand, library, and graveyard counts. Cards in your hand are counted, never read. It uses Tabletop Simulator's own scripting, with no memory reading and no overlays.

How do I attach equipment or an aura to a creature?

Stack the creature on top of the cards you want attached, right-click the stack, and choose Attach / Detach (Squadbook). The creature stays out and the rest tuck under its left edge and move with it. The same item on that creature takes everything off again. It needs no other mod.

Which tables does it work with?

It has been tested on four-seat and six-seat scripted Commander tables. It finds each seat's battlefield, library, and graveyard on its own, first from the table's own zones and otherwise by their shape and where they sit. If a table is unusual, you can name scripting zones with the seat color, such as "Blue Playmat" and "Blue Library". The Tabletop Simulator page lists everything the object adds to the table.

Achievements and bragging

Where do I see achievements?

/brag list shows every achievement, the share of your server that has it, and a check on yours. /brag show posts your trophy case, rarest first. Unlocks are also announced after the game that earned them.

What is /brag claim for?

Some feats never reach anything the bot can read, such as winning without dealing combat damage. Run /brag claim, start typing the achievement, and pick it from the list. The bot posts your claim and another player from that game presses Confirm. You cannot confirm your own.

Why are some achievements hidden?

A few are surprises. They stay out of the list until someone in your server stumbles into one, and then everyone can see it.

What are Wrapped and the Gazette?

Two images made to be shared. /wrapped me turns your year into one card: games, wins, your nemesis, the films you watched, and a title. /wrapped server does the same for the whole server.

The Squadbook Gazette is your week as a newspaper front page, with a headline and stories picked from the games and films of the last seven days. /gazette prints it any time, and /config recap picks a channel where it posts itself every Sunday at 20:00.

Movie nights

How does the movie roll work?

An organizer runs /movie roll, picks a list in the list option as they type, and Squadbook picks a film from it at random. The card shows the poster and has two buttons. Watching marks the film watched for your server, for good. Skip rolls again and leaves the film on the list for another night.

By default a roll reaches into the 300 best known films of the list. Pick Top 1,000 or Everything in the pool option to go deeper. /halloween and /christmas still work as shortcuts with the list already chosen.

Which lists are there?

Holidays (Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving, New Year's Eve, St. Patrick's Day, Fourth of July, and Easter), hand-picked genres (comedy, drama, rom-com, action, sci-fi, thriller, and family and animated), every well-known horror film, and new releases that are already out at home. Then there are the marathons. /movie lists shows every list with how far your server is through each, and the movie nights page has the full set with film counts.

New releases are films from about three months to 18 months past their US release, by which time nearly every film can be rented or streamed at home.

How do marathons work?

A marathon is a whole saga in the best order to watch it: the Marvel Infinity and Multiverse sagas, Star Wars, Middle-earth, the Wizarding World, Jurassic Park, Fast and Furious, Mission: Impossible, John Wick, Pixar, Toy Story, Shrek, Studio Ghibli, James Bond, Alien, Halloween, Scream, the Conjuring, and Planet of the Apes. On a marathon, /movie roll plays the next film your server has not watched, with a progress bar on the card.

Already seen one? We have seen it, next counts it as watched and moves on to the next film, without asking who was there or for ratings. /movie watched on a marathon shows the whole order with what you have seen ticked.

If we watch a film on one list, does it count on the others?

Yes. Your server has one record of what it has watched and how it rated each film. Watch Ghostbusters from the Halloween list and it is already ticked on Comedy. Watch Toy Story on the Pixar marathon and the Toy Story marathon starts at Toy Story 2.

Can our server roll from its own list instead of thousands of films?

Yes, two ways. /movie backlog add puts any film at all on your server's backlog: start typing and the suggestions search every film Wikidata knows, not just the built-in lists. Roll from it with /movie roll list:Our backlog, and see it with /movie backlog show.

To narrow one of the built-in lists instead, an organizer adds films with /movie ours add (pick the list, start typing a title, and pick it from the suggestions) and removes them with /movie ours remove. Once a list has your own picks, rolls from it come from them by default; choose another pool to go wider for a night. /movie ours show lists them with the films you have watched ticked.

Both belong to your server alone. No other server can see it or roll from it, and what you have watched is never shared either.

What happens with sequels, and with films we have already watched?

A sequel never comes up before the film it follows, so you will not be handed part four of something you have not started. If a roll lands on a film you have watched and there is a sequel you have not, the sequel is offered instead. If nothing unseen follows it, the buttons change to Watch again and Reroll.

Who can roll, and who can rate?

Rolling, Watching, Skip, and Undo are for organizers: anyone with Manage Server, or the organizer role set with /config organizer-role. That way one person runs the night. Once a film is marked watched, everyone can press I'm in to be counted as there (press it again to step out) and rate the film from 1 to 5, one vote each, changeable later. /movie watched shows what your server has seen from a list, when, how many were there, and its favourites. Marathons work the same way: organizers play the next film, everyone says they are in and rates it.

Does it remember when we watched something and who was there?

Yes. Each night is saved with the day and time, and with everyone who pressed I'm in or rated the film. /movie watched shows your last ten nights from a list with the names and ratings, and your five highest rated films. Old nights that were loaded from a spreadsheet show the date only.

We watched a film without rolling for it. Can it count?

Yes. An organizer runs /movie mark, picks the list, starts typing the title, and picks it from the suggestions. The film is marked watched and the usual card appears, so people can say they watched it and rate it.

Where does the film list come from?

The film facts come from Wikidata, the public database behind Wikipedia, and every list is ranked by how widely each film is written about. The Horror and Halloween lists are every film tagged as horror, and Christmas every film tagged as a Christmas film, with favourites that carry no such tag added by hand, such as Hocus Pocus, Beetlejuice, and Ghostbusters. The other holidays, the genres, and the marathons are picked by hand, and marathons are put in viewing order by hand too. New releases are worked out from release dates. The poster on each card is the picture at the top of the film's Wikipedia article. The tags are added by volunteers, so an odd pick can slip in. Press Skip, and tell us so it can be taken off the list.

Fixing things

Something broke. How do I tell you?

Run /report and describe what happened. If a command just failed, the message shows a short reference code and a Report this button that opens the same form with the code filled in, so the team can find exactly what went wrong. Reports go to a private channel the Squadbook team reads.

A command is missing, or it says "Loading options failed".

Press Ctrl+R in Discord to reload it, wait a minute, and try again. New commands can take a few minutes to reach every server, and a list can fail to load for a moment while the bot restarts after an update.

I closed my game and no session card posted.
  • Cards only post for the Steam games Squadbook follows, which right now is WARDOGS.
  • Cards post about two minutes after you quit, and only for sittings of five minutes or more.
  • An organizer has to pick a channel once with /config steam.
  • Run /steam status to see everyone who linked and whether each is being followed. Anyone with a cross is not Steam friends with Squadbook Companion yet, and the command sends them a fresh invite.
  • You have to be Steam friends with Squadbook Companion. Run /steam link again and it will tell you whether you are.
The Steam friend invite never arrived.

Check the pending invites in your Steam friends window. If it is not there, add Squadbook Companion as a friend yourself. It accepts requests from anyone who has run /steam link, usually within a minute.

The Squadbook Table object spawned as a plain block with no buttons.

That is an old copy. Delete it, load a fresh one from the Workshop listing, and save it over the old one in Saved Objects. Paste your token into its box before pressing Send.

Your data

What does Squadbook store about me?

Your Discord id and display name, the games you took part in, and whatever you chose to link. The full list is in the privacy policy. It does not read messages and does not store voice.

How do I delete it?

A server organizer can erase everything Squadbook holds for that server with /config delete-all-data. It is immediate and permanent. You can remove your own links any time with /steam unlink and /link riot-unlink.
